All applicants must apply to the university's Graduate School in addition to the Department of Art and Art History.

Submit Graduate School Application; Pay Fee
Suggested Deadline: December 15, 2015
The application for admission to the university's Graduate School is completed online at ApplyTexas.org. Review the notes below before beginning the application.
- The ApplyTexas portion of the admissions application should not take longer than an hour and is vital to completing all the subsequent application requirements for admission to our program. Your requests for reference will not be sent until you have submitted and paid for the ApplyTexas portion of your application. For this reason, WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU SUBMIT THE APPLY TEXAS PORTION OF YOUR APPLICATION BY DECEMBER 15, 2015 AT THE LATEST.
- In the Educational Background section, enter your primary area of interest (Painting + Drawing, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture + Extended Media, or Transmedia). If you have a secondary area of interest, you may specify it in SlideRoom.
- In the References section, provide names and email addresses of three recommenders. A secure email link will be sent to each person after you submit your application and pay the application fee.
- In the Statements section, simply type the following: Statements submitted through SlideRoom.

Submit Transcripts, Test Scores, and Letters of Recommendations
Deadline: January 8, 2016
All of the following are submitted to the Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC) of the university's Graduate School.
- GIAC encourages all transcripts to be submitted electronically. Institutions that are on the Texas Electronic Transcript Network or which use the national ANSI ASC X12 transcript format (SPEEDE) can provide electronic transcripts. Check with the registrar of your institution to find out if transcripts can be sent via the SPEEDE server.
- If your institution cannot send transcripts via SPEEDE, you may upload a scanned PDF copy of your official transcript(s) from all undergraduate and graduate institutions. We do not accept PDF scans of unofficial (student view) transcripts. If you upload a PDF of your transcript and are offered admission, you will need to then have an official copy of your transcript sent via mail.
- Transcripts are not required from any college that offers no coursework beyond the sophomore level (i.e. community or junior college).
- Current or former UT–Austin students must pay an additional $10 for the cost of duplicating their academic records.

- GRE scores are not required for admission to the Studio Art graduate program.
International applicants must take either the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the Academic Examination of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam and earn at least the minimum scores below. If you hold a bachelor's degree from a U.S. institution or an English-only speaking country, these tests are waived. Overall Band Score: 6.5
Scores must be received by January 9, 2015, without exception. We strongly recommend taking your test at least one month in advance to insure your scores are received on time.
The code for the UT–Austin is 6882. No department code is needed.
Letters of Recommendation (3)
- Letters must be received from recommenders by January 8, 2016
- This means you need to warn your references the month before that they will be receiving a letter request from us and we need to receive their letter back as immediately as possible.
- When you complete the References section of your ApplyTexas application, you provide names and email addresses of your three recommenders. A secure email link will be sent to each person after you submit your application and pay the application fee. This is the required method for receiving letters.

Areas of Interest
In recognition that some applicants may work across multiple media, students may identify up to two areas of interest from among our five: Painting/Drawing, Photography, Print, Sculpture or Transmedia. There is no penalty for selecting only one. Applicants will be evaluated by faculty in the area(s) selected. Note that should you be offered admission by an area, your studio will be located there. If you uncertain as to which area is most appropriate for you, contact the Graduate Advisor, Professor Amy Hauft, email@example.com.
- Your portfolio should be your best, most recent work and reflect an informed knowledge of contemporary art and a committed, coherent body of work.
- Portfolios will only be accepted through SlideRoom.
Ordering / Labeling
Images/videos can be labeled and ordered after they are uploaded. Arrange images in reverse chronological order, newest to oldest. Work submitted cannot be over two years old. Each piece must be labeled with title, medium, size, and date.
File Size / Image Size / File Types
SlideRoom optimizes files for speed and resolution. Please follow SlideRoom guidelines regarding size and media type.
2D / 3D Applicants
(Painting + Drawing, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture + Extended Media)
Submit 20 images and no more
Time-Based Applicants (Transmedia)
(1) 7-10 works represented by up to 20 images
(2) Within those 20 images, include three-to-four minute excerpts of 5 works
(3) Up to 5 password-protected links to full-length versions of the same works (optional)
Include link information in the area for noting media and size.
Applicants working in other media platforms (i.e. interactive, software-art, web, etc.):
Up to 20 images and up to 5 password-protected and/or unprotected links to a form of documentation that best represents each work.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR TRANSMEDIA APPLICANTS: All applicants may submit a data DVD or a USB solid state flash drive containing full-length versions of the five excerpts. (optional).

Current and Previous Degrees and Institutions
- List current degree(s) you hold and/or will receive between now and the proposed semester for which you are applying for admission, where you have or will receive(d) them, and in what year (e.g. BFA, Gilligan’s Island University, 2010).
- Do not include institutions from which you did not receive a degree (i.e. summer schools, post-baccalaureate certificates, etc.), although these details may go on your resume.
List of Recommenders
- List the names and titles of your three recommenders that you submitted to ApplyTexas (e.g. Lovey Howell, Associate Professor at Gilligan’s Island University)
Statement of Purpose
Address the following:
- Write about any relevant experiences that have prepared you as an artist and describe why this is the right time for you to go to graduate school.
- Describe your professional goals and how you plan to actively achieve them while in school and after.
- Describe what you can contribute, initiate, and risk as a member of our community.
- Why is this program a good fit for you?
- Describe your ambitions five years beyond graduate school.
- Discuss the artwork you are submitting. Describe its origins and your ambitions for its future as best you can see forward. Tell us: what makes you do what you do?
- Your resume should include your current address, phone(s), email, education ( in addition to college/degree), awards, exhibitions and work experience. A website link is optional.

Check the Status of Your Application
You can monitor the status of your application on the university's My Status website. It is solely your responsibility to confirm that all materials have been received and the application is complete. My Status will list items that have been submitted and those that are still required. You can review the status of your recommendation letters, send a prompt to your recommender, and request additional recommenders. After a decision has been made, My Status will also show your admission status.
- Only Letters of Recommendation submitted electronically show up in My Status. Use My Status to add recommenders or resend recommendation requests.
- You may upload pdf documents of your transcripts using My Status. Transcript uploads should show up in My Status instantaneously.
- Disregard the notice that your electronic ApplyTexas Statement is Needed. The faculty only use the SlideRoom version of your Statements. Do not mail a hardcopy of your statements to any university office.
- When it displays Received, all SlideRoom materials were received: portfolio, two statements, and resume. There will be a three-to-five business day lag time between the date you submit your SlideRoom materials and when My Status displays Received for SlideRoom materials. Please do not contact the department to confirm receipt of materials.
Finalists in each area will be interviewed via phone or Skype at some time before mid-February. The department will initiate contact with finalists only. Please do not contact the department to request an interview.
