Dr. David Stuart (Professor in Art History) was recently featured in Science News and the UK-based magazine, Eureka (PDF), for his discovery of an ancient Mayan text that refers to the supposed apocalyptic date, December 21, 2012. Deciphering the Mayan glyphs, Dr. Stuart suggests that the 2012 date concerns political turmoil of the time, rather than an apocalyptic prophecy. Dr. Stuart's research is supported by the Schele research fund from the College of Fine Arts and through the Casa Herrera facility in Guatemala, where he conducts a majority of his research throughout the year.
