Assistant Professor of Studio Art in Painting & Drawing Scherezade García-Vazquez's Vía Crucis: When the Sea is My Land has been acquired by the Jorge M. Pérez Collection. The artwork will first be exhibited at El Espacio 23, a contemporary art space founded by Mr. Pérez, located in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood, and in time will join the permanent collection of The Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).

Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is committed to collecting and showcasing international modern and contemporary art. Its exhibitions highlight Miami’s diverse community and pivotal geographic location at the crossroads of the Americas, and uniquely position it to be the best at presenting art from the U.S. Latino experience, the African diaspora, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

García-Vazquez' pieces are included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Art Museum of the Americas, El Museo del Barrio, The Housatonic Museum of Art, El Museo de Arte Moderno in Santo Domingo, among others. Her unique tropical baroque style is grounded in history and storytelling and tries to recover erased histories, while also reflecting on her experience as an immigrant in America. Through the deconstruction and the juxtaposition of symbols of Americanness, nationhood and freedom embedded in slavery and oppression, she aims to present the most outrages signs of resistance through the mixing of race, through a fierce Optimism.
