Bogdan Perzyński is a Professor and co-founder of one of the first interdisciplinary arts programs in a U.S. university context, the Transmedia Area at the University of Texas at Austin’s Department of Art and Art History. He was trained in law at the University of Adam Mickiewicz, Poznań, Poland, and in architecture and fine arts at the University of Fine Arts in Poznań, where he earned his graduate fine arts degree in 1979 in Painting and Drawing. Before coming to the University of Texas at Austin, he taught at the University of Fine Arts, Poznań, and the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Professor Perzyński’s research and teaching address evolving questions of art’s interdisciplinary character including the philosophies of communicative action, social pragmatism, and individual invention. Beginning in 1978, he approached art practice as the hinge of inquiry of surface, volume, and modularity as possible common roots to basic principles of art and non-art disciplines. After several years, he started to expand his artwork’s field towards real-time systems, including performative work and social interventions. Over the last two decades, Professor Perzyński has been exploring and developing themes in video, interactive code, computer vision and positioning, and physical interaction with architectural settings. These works and newer pieces have been presented in Argentina, Brazil, China, Germany, Greece, Israel, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Thailand, and the United States.
