Bio
Payton is a graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin specializing in Art History and critical theory of the Modern, Postwar and Contemporary periods in the United States. Payton holds her BA in Art History, Theory and Criticism from School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her thesis examined “doubling” in Roni Horn’s Things That Happen Again and proposed a new methodology, based in psychoanalysis and twin studies, for considering these works against the history of Minimalism. Previously the founder and director of independent exhibition venues Grunts Rare Books and Sulk Chicago, Payton has curated numerous exhibitions and public programs with emerging, mid-career, and established artists. She also served as the Director of M. LeBlanc from 2021–2025 and Programming Assistant for Expo Chicago (Frieze) from 2024–2026.
