Teresa Hubbard

Professor Hubbard received her B.F.A. from the University of Texas at Austin and went on to the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, graduate studies at Yale University School of Art and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Canada, where she earned her M.F.A. in 1992. Before relocating to Austin in 2000, Hubbard was based for more than a decade in Basel, Switzerland and Berlin, Germany. Hubbard has taught in interdisciplinary fields of video, photography and sculpture in universities and art academies in Canada, Germany and Switzerland.

Hubbard works in collaboration with the Swiss artist, Alexander Birchler. Their work invites suggestive, open-ended reflections on memory, place and film. Hubbard / Birchler’s work is held in numerous national and international museum collections including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden at the Smithsonian, Washington D.C.; Kunsthaus Zürich, Switzerland, Modern Art Museum Fort Worth; Museum of Fine Arts Houston; Yokohama Museum of Art, Japan and the Pinakothek der Moderne, Münich, Germany, among many others.

Their extensive international exhibition history includes venues such as the Venice Biennial; the Tate Museum Liverpool; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid and the Mori Museum Tokyo. Numerous monographic books about their work have been published and their exhibitions are regularly reviewed in the New York Times, ArtForum International, Art in America, Frieze, and Parkett. Hubbard / Birchler’s work is featured on the PBS series, Art 21 – Art in the 21st Century, an educational resource, archive and history of contemporary art that is broadcast in over 50 countries.
