Professor, Studio Art (Sculpture & Extended Media)
Throughout her career, Sawyer has created installations which translate the notion of an ancient sacred space into a contemporary vocabulary. Sawyer is particularly interested in relationships between the experience of space and the experience of transcendence — and the ways in which the architectural and ritual converge to create a forum for contemplation and reflection. Recently, Sawyer’s practice has focused on creating architectural installations that combine her research in art, architecture and landscape architecture.
Sawyer has been a recipient of numerous awards such as a Fulbright Grant to India and to Japan, the American Academy in Rome, a National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts Award, a Japan Foundation Fellowship and a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award. She has exhibited nationally in New York, Los Angeles, New Haven, Houston, Dallas and Austin and internationally in the United Kingdom, Italy, India and Japan.
Sawyer is represented by Holly Johnson Gallery in Dallas.
