The Center for the Study of Ancient Italy (CSAI) is pleased to announce Architecture of Republican Rome: New Directions. This workshop brings together an international group of scholars whose publications in the last three years have, in different ways, addressed the close relationship between architecture and the state in Republican Rome, and whose work, taken together, shines a new light on a previously neglected field: Amy Russell, Durham University, UK (The Politics of Public Space in Republican Rome, Cambridge University Press 2016); Seth Bernard, University of Toronto (Building Mid-Republican Rome: Labor, Architecture, and the Urban Economy, Oxford University Press 2018) and Penelope Davies, University of Texas at Austin (Architecture and Politics in Republican Rome, Cambridge University Press 2017).
Where do we go from here? The workshop will serve as a forum in which to explore new approaches to the field. Bernard, Russell and Davies will briefly discuss their goals in their publications, before the floor is opened to general discussion, with special time allotted for undergraduate participation. Participants will then reconvene to CSAI (ART. 3.430) for a light lunch and a chance for continued discussion with the panelists. The workshop is open to all UT students and faculty.
