Many card games were played and many gin and tonics were drunk. Ebbing between the familiar and strange, the spectacular and the unspectacular, Marta Lee and Anika Steppe’s paintings and photographs examine common tropes of tourism, the functions and perils of leisure, and what it means to ‘know’ and hold pride for something as large as a state.

About the Artists

Marta Lee was born in Moscow, Idaho and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 2014.  She is currently pursuing her Master of Fine Arts in Painting at The University of Texas at Austin and will be studying at the Royal College of Art in London this fall.

Anika Steppe was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and received her Bachelor of Science in Cinema and Photography at Ithaca College. She is currently a Russell Lee Endowed Presidential Scholar in Photography at The University of Texas at Austin.
