This lecture proposes that Early Byzantine art made the spiritual perfection of the ascetic body understandable and even visible to Late Antique viewers by mobilizing metaphors drawn from precious materials and making practices.  

Bio: Dr. Katherine Taronas is a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for the Study of Antiquity and Christian Origins and the Religious Studies department at UT Austin. She is an art historian specializing in the art and architecture of the Late Antique Mediterranean and Byzantine Empire. Before coming to UT, Katherine was a Byzantine Studies Fellow at Dumbarton Oaks and a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art History at Kenyon College.
