The annual Viewpoint Series invites leading curators, critics, and scholars of the contemporary art world for a sequence of concentrated visits each spring. The 2024 Viewpoint Series is proud to welcome curators Ana Janevski and Sohrab Mohebbi for a series of lectures.
Janevski is a curator in the Department of Media and Performance at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. She has organized more than 30 performances by artists including Yvonne Rainer, Simone Forti, Trajal Harrell, Boris Charmatz, Jérôme Bel, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, and Rabih Mroué. Currrently she is organizing a major retrospective of Joan Jonas work from the 1960s to the present.
Mohebbi is the current Director of SculptureCenter in Long Island City, New York, and was the Kathe and Jim Patrinos Curator of the 58th Carnegie International from 2020- 2022.
Their Viewpoint lectures will take place on January 29, March 28, and April 25 at 3:30pm in ART 1.102.
Ana Janevski is a curator in the Department of Media and Performance. She has organized more than 30 performances by artists including Yvonne Rainer, Simone Forti, Trajal Harrell, Boris Charmatz, Jérôme Bel, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, and Rabih Mroué, among others. She has been involved in the programming of MoMA’s Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis Studio, where she curated Nora Turato: pool 5 (2022), Studio Residency: Okwui Okpokwasili (2022), David Tudor and Composers Inside Electronics Inc.: Rainforest V (variation 1) (2019), and Sung Hwan Kim: Temper Clay (2021, with Martha Joseph). She is currently preparing a retrospective of Joan Jonas (2024). Her collaboratively organized exhibitions at MoMA include Judson Dance Theater: The Work Is Never Done (2018), with Thomas (T.) Jean Lax and Martha Joseph; Scenes for a New Heritage: Contemporary Art from the Collection (2016), with Eva Respini and Sarah Suzuki; and Projects 100: Akram Zaatari (2103), with Eva Respini. From 2007 to 2011, she held the position of curator at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, where she curated, among many other projects, the large-scale exhibition and accompanying publication As Soon As I Open My Eyes I See a Film, which focused on Yugoslav experimental film and art from the 1960s and 1970s (2011). She regularly contributes to and co-edits publications on performance, the body, and the history of art in Eastern Europe.
She received her MPhil at L’École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris and her MA at Sorbonne Nouvelle University Paris 3.
Sohrab Mohebbi was appointed Director of SculptureCenter in 2022. He is also serving as the Kathe and Jim Patrinos Curator of the 58th Carnegie International, opening in September 2022. Mohebbi has also served as SculptureCenter’s Curator-at-Large (2020-21), and as Curator between 2018 and 2020. Before joining SculptureCenter in 2018, he was associate curator at REDCAT in Los Angeles and curatorial fellow at the Queens Museum. He is an advisor at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and has organized exhibitions and programs for the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; High Desert Test Sites, Joshua Tree, CA; SALT, Istanbul; and the Center for Historical Reenactments, Johannesburg, South Africa.
He received an MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College and a BFA in photography from Tehran Art University. Mohebbi has organized solo exhibitions by Banu Cennetoğlu, Fiona Connor, Tishan Hsu, Hassan Khan, John Knight, and Falke Pisano, among others. In 2012, he was the recipient of a grant from the Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Program for his blog presencedocuments.
